The Matthew R. Churchill Post-Secondary Education Entrance Scholarship

2009

Claire Lenehan has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Matthew R. Churchill Memorial Scholarship. Claire is currently doing her second semester of her first year studies at MUN.  A long time Caps hockey player, Chris finished her final year of midget hockey in April 2008 but continues to play with the Female Under-20 Hockey team as well as coaches one of the younger Caps female hockey teams.  The picture below shows Rod Churchill presenting a $1000 cheque to Claire.


2008

For the first time since the scholarships has been awarded, 2008 saw a tie for a recipient.  In consultation with the Eastern School District, it was decided that two awards would be given since no clear winner could be announced.  We are pleased to announce that the 2008 scholarship recipients are David Lahey (left) and Bill Casey (right).  Both are currently attending Memorial University were both remain active as volunteers with the St. John's Minor Hockey Association and David still volunteers time with St. John's Minor Baseball as an official.  Below is a picture showing Rod Churchill presenting David and Bill with their $1,000 cheques.


2007

Chris Clark has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Matthew R. Churchill Memorial Scholarship. Chris is currently attending MUN where he is pursuing an engineering degree.  A long time Caps hockey player, Chris finished his final year of midget hockey in April 2007.  Chris is also active with rowing and is a member of the Provincial Rowing Team.  The picture below shows Rod Churchill presenting a $1000 cheque to Chris.


2006

Rod and Desma in conjunction with the Eastern School District is pleased to announce Ryan Roberts as the 1st recipient of the Matthew R. Churchill Memorial Scholarship.  Ryan is currently attending Memorial University of Newfoundland and was a long time Caps Minor Hockey Player.  In addition to his studies, Ryan also coaches power skating for beginners.  The picture below shows Rod Churchill presenting Ryan with a cheque for $1,000.
